Market Report – September 2022
Chilly/ Capsicum
In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, Red Chilli acreage is likely to go down by 12% The sowing activity also got disturbed due to rainfall in the past few weeks.
As per govt. data, in June 2022, 26,016 MT of exports reported and down by 11.5% from the previous month.
Sri Lanka economic crisis, lockdown in China during early months of the current year also impacted the business.
Due to the lower stock at cold storages, prices are steadily increasing. Carry forward stocks of chilli in August 2022 is reported to be around 50 – 55 % less when compared to August 2021.
Transplantation will be completed by September end and Pre- monsoon rain was reported good in all crop growing regions.
Estimated 20% of the chilli areas are shifted to competitive crop cotton due the higher price and quality issues from previous crop cycle.
Forecast: The Chilly prices will be on an upward trend this year and expected to remain in the higher levels going forward as well.
Paprika
Chilly cultivation area is reported to be short.
Transplantation of seedlings to farms are ongoing. Black thrips infestation damage has not been reported till now.
Prices of all high color and medium variety chilies have increased in domestic markets due to less stocks, huge demand associated with festival season
Forecast: The Paprika prices seems to be stable till October – November and expected to increase in during the new year.
Turmeric
The erratic and heavy rains in the turmeric growing regions may have an impact on the yield of upcoming turmeric crop.
Maharashtra has reported crop damages due to severe rains in the growing belts. Regular finger turmeric prices have seen a down trend in August due to less demand in domestic and international markets.
Kocha availability is limited in domestic markets and prices remained downward.
Panangali turmeric prices were also reported downward at main markets due to less demand.
Forecast: Crop availability & Price are stable at the moment.
Coriander
Coriander market is highly volatile due to the domestic supply demand factors.
The availability of coriander is very limited in the market due to the lower production. The pipeline stock is almost empty and stockiest are holding the material for expecting the further price hikes on account of upcoming festival demands.
The new crop season activity started with seed treatment and field preparation activities. Reported good pre monsoon rains in all the crop growing regions and water supply is sufficient from the crop development.
Forecast: - Coriander prices will have an upward trend till the next crop season in February.
Cumin
Good pre monsoon shower received in growing regions and sufficient water availability for crop. Cumin seed treatment process already started by farmers. Cumin Sowing area is expected to improve compared to previous year since increased price fetched by farmers in current year and favorable weather conditions. Sowing will start from first week of November 2022.
Majority of the crop harvest has been sold off by the farmers and expected hold crop volume with farmer is 30%. While the current price level has incentivized farmers to sow more cumin crop for next crop calendar, alternative crops like cotton and oil seeds are also traded at high price levels
Recommendations: - Cumin Prices will have an upward trend till the next crop season
Nutmeg & Mace
Indian nutmeg production is short. Material availability is limited at domestic markets. Prices are reported upward at both domestic & International markets. It is expected to firm up further as Indonesian BWP grade nutmeg availability is limited, and prices continued its firm trend.
Forecast: Nutmeg & Mace prices will be on an upward trend.
Black Pepper
Indian Scenario
Indian black pepper prices have shown a steady to firm trend. Prices are firming up due to festival season and good demand. New Crop is at its flowering and berry seeing stages and rainfall has been more than normal in the growing areas hence it can impact the crop production.
Indonesian Scenario
Pepper harvesting in Indonesia is going on in full swing. Incessant rains throughout producing regions have delayed the post-harvest operations.
White pepper light berry prices increased continuously due to less stocks and high domestic demand.Vietnam Scenario
Vietnam pepper season has ended. New crop is in berry seeing stage.Sri Lankan Scenario
Its offseason in Srilanka, Next Season is expected only in December. Availability of high Piperine material for extraction is limited
Forecast: Black & White Pepper prices will be an upward trend.
